Food Lion foundation donates to Bounty & Soul

Staff reports
Adam Kelly, right, the food sourcing and volunteer coordinator for Bounty & Soul, works with a volunteer during the Aug. 6 market at St. James Episcopal Church.

Bounty & Soul, which connects people with fresh food and wellness education, has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation.

The nonprofit will use the gift to buy food to distribute at its free weekly community and to fund health and wellness classes at the markets.

“We are excited and grateful to have Food Lion support our efforts to advance equitable access to healthy foods, nutrition and well-being education, and opportunities for social connection in Buncombe County," said founder and interim executive director Ali Casparian.

"At each of our community-based no-cost markets, we provide healthy food, evidence-based wellness lessons and a welcoming, inclusive space for people to gather, connect and thrive.  It is our believe that everone should have access to fresh produce and everyone should have the opportunity to learn, participate in, and experience optimal health and well-being. That is our mission, and we could not do it without the support of organizations like Food Lion."

Bounty & Soul says it reaches about 800 people each week through its markets, which include materials and classes in both English and Spanish.
