This photo, taken by Gertrude Sprague, shows two young visitors on the porch of the Black Mountain Hotel at the turn of the 19th century. Built in 1882, the hotel once stood along the north side of the railroad tracks in downtown Black Mountain, roughly where Cove Auto is located today. During her lifetime, Gertrude Sprague managed several inns and hotels in the Swannanoa Valley, including the Black Mountain Hotel and the Lake Eden Inn.
