February 22, 2024: Courtney Cirone, 41, of Marion stands outside of her home in northern Michigan where she developed a fungal disease caused by spores that are endemic in the Great Lakes region called blastomycosis and a similar fungal disease from nature, histoplasmosis. Some people breathe in these spores and are fine or some may contract cold or flu-like symptoms and get better in short order. But for others, it can be far more serious, and affect organs, bones, and especially lungs.
